Vortex Flow Meter Pros Cons

Measuring the flow of the fluid is important for many purposes. But this measurement is not that easy as it looks. It can be done by many methods including the use of vortex flow meter. The vortex flow meter works by passing the fluid whether liquid or gases through the bluff body called the shedder bar so that the disturbances can be created within the fluid. These disturbances lead to the creation of vortices which trail behind the cylinder on both sides of the shedder bar. The vortices movement is directly proportional to the movement of the fluid. There are two types of vortex flow meter:

  1. 1.      Inline Vortex Flow Meter: the inline flow meter works the way it has been discussed above. It is the popular form of the vortex flow meter.
  2. 2.      Insertion Vortex Meter: it works on the principle of moving the fluid through the pipe where the highly sensitive sensors are planted to measure the velocity of the fluid.

Application Of Vortex Flow Meter:

Vortex Flow meters have now become very popular among the researcher to use it in industries and companies. Here is the list of some of the uses of vortex flow meters:

  • Measuring the flow of liquid suspension
  • Higher viscosity fluid
  • Stream measurement
  • Water application
  • Chilled water
  • Hot water
  • Water and glycol mixtures
  • Condensate measurement
  • Portable water
  • Solvents
  • Acids
  • Ultra pure water
  • De-ionized water

Advantages Of Using Vortex Flow Meter:

There are many benefits of using the vortex flow meter and some of these are mentioned below.

  • There are no moving parts that are vulnerable to wear
  • Maintenance is not required on a regular basis
  • Liquid, gas and stream all can be measured using the vortex flow meter
  • Reliability
  • Long term accuracy
  • Cost of installation is also less for the vortex flow meter
  • The flow meter is available in many temperature ranges
  • Available in wide variety of pipe sizes

Disadvantages:

There are few things to watch when using the vortex flow meter as it cannot be used for the fluid with low velocity as at this rate it is not possible to measure accurately.

Secondly it is important to ten pipe diameter is recommended as the minimum length of straight pipe which is required upstream and downstream so, that the measurements are taken accurately.

The advantages always outweigh the disadvantages and the vortex flow meter occupied a special place in today’s life.
