What is a magnetic flow meter? A magnetic flow meter is basically an instrument that is used to measure the nonlinear, linear, mass or volumetric flow rate of a gas or a liquid. The magnetic flow meter therefore may not work for fluids that are not conductive.

A magnetic flow meter works on the principle of Faradays Law which states that the voltage across any conductor that is induced, as it flows at right angles through a magnetic field, is proportional to the velocity of that particular conductor.

Whenever you are making a choice or shopping for a particular appliance or device, you will want to consider a couple of factors before making a purchase. In the same way, when making a choice of the magnetic flow meter sizing, it is important to consider the longevity and performance of the same. As opposed to only matching the pipe size that currently exists, it is more preferable to make a calculation of the ideal meter size. This will go a long way in insuring the optimum and appropriate velocity of liquid for the application.

When installing the magnetic flow meter, some important considerations should be looked at. Identify an ideal place for the sensor where the profile of the flow is least affected by any disturbances and where it is fully developed.

The recommended size is normally 5 diameters downstream and 10 diameters pipe of straight run upstream. To ensure a fully turbulent profile of the flow, some situations could require 20 pipe diameters upstream or even more. It is important when selecting flow meters and getting the magnetic flow meter sizing to consider the availability of spare parts, familiarity of plant personnel, the mean time between failure history at the particular site of the plant and the experience of the plant personnel with maintenance and calibration.

Additionally, the magnetic flow meter range is also determined by the identification of the maximum and minimum flows that will be measured.
